Before forming Toto the members of the group did session work for Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts,[4and Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher. The guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's vocalist.
About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour established them as a brand across the globe.
After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are put in financial difficulty. They decide to change their name and record a new album with an entirely new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Toto was the first album released by the band in 1978. It was a huge success that helped the band gain international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen more albums, all of which have also been a hit.
In 1984, Toto wrote their first, and to this date only, film score for the film Dune. This was a major undertaking that required the entire group to be involved. The album that came out, Kingdom of Desire, was another record that was a huge success. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen, who was a member of Le Roux. The band continued with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album featured a few songs that were hits, like "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on a hiatus. The band members of the group a chance to pursue solo projects. In 1996, the group was reunited to tour and release an album. This was the first time that all of the original members were on stage together for over 10 years.
The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that all original members of Toto were performing together. Following this, the band broke up again. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in over 31 year that all of Toto's founding members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto has been one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, releasing megahits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line,"" and their 8X platinum smash, "Africa." With a range of influences, from progressive rock to world beats to soul and jazz, the group continues to please their fans with their energetic arena rock.
Despite their popularity The group faced a few difficulties in their later years. In 2002 keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes took a leave of absence for medical reasons. of absence. Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over however the group was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a string of lineup changes as well as a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to call it quits for a few years. However, the group resumed performing in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return to the band's top form, and the tour that went with it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both returned to the band.
